Placer Valley Tourism and @the Grounds CEO Kim Summers has helped make Placer Valley a tourism destination, from hosting major sports tournaments to large trade shows.

Summers and her team’s hard work attract more than 150,000 people and generate $21 million every year to Placer Valley – boosting revenue for businesses, including hotels and restaurants; creating stable jobs; and generating sales-tax revenue for local government.

She worked tirelessly to transform the Placer County Fairgrounds into the multipurpose event campus now known as @the Grounds. The $47 million project included the construction of the Roebbelen Center, one of the largest sports and meeting spaces on the West Coast.

@the Grounds is a first-of-its-kind effort on the West Coast, and has received much attention in the events industry nationwide as a success story on how government and the private-sector can work together.

Today, Placer Valley Tourism brings in more than 500 events per year compared to 100 in 2010. Also, hotel room nights have almost quadrupled over the same period. Events range from anime conferences and basketball tournaments located @the Grounds to large tournaments at soccer fields and softball diamonds throughout Placer Valley.

Summers joined Placer Valley Tourism as the hospitality manager in 2008, and was later promoted to marketing director. She was named CEO of both organizations in September 2022, after serving in an interim role.

Before she joined Placer Valley Tourism, Summers was the Senior Promotions Manager for the Sacramento River Cats, a Triple-A baseball organization.

Summers earned a bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in marketing from Sacramento State University. She is married and has three children, who are very active in youth sports. Summers is passionate about sports marketing and is thankful to have found a successful career in this exciting industry.
